An equitable and sustainable future for people and planet

BHP Foundation is a non-profit organization working to address the root causes of sustainability challenges relevant to the resources industry.

Established in 2013, the BHP Foundation was created to make a distinctive and lasting contribution to addressing some of the world’s most pressing sustainable development challenges. Funded solely by BHP, the Foundation partners with organisations whose work can shape a more just and sustainable future.

Earlier this year, the BHP Foundation marked a major milestone, US$500 million invested in partnerships since inception. In the past three years we have invested over US$150 million. Working with more than 40 partners, we have driven systemic change: advancing Indigenous self-determination, while scaling innovative approaches to education equity across Australia, Canada, Chile and Peru.

As the Foundation approaches the full investment of the endowment, we are considering the legacy we can create for our partners, our donor and the global philanthropy landscape.

As committed, our focus during this coming year remains on making sure every partnership and program of work is future-ready, so that the impact we have created together endures. In looking to share what we have learnt, we have created our Learning in Practice series. Our aim is to capture and share the insights, tools and practices developed over the past decade. We will share this series with all interested parties later this year, on this website.

Thank you to everyone who supported us over the past 13 years. Thank you to our partners who have helped shape who we are. Through their collaboration, insight and commitment, we have been able to create impact that will endure long beyond any individual initiative. We are also deeply grateful to our donor, BHP, and to our Foundation Board. Their belief in our purpose, strategic guidance and support is a reflection of their commitment, partnership and trust, and we thank them sincerely.
