A practical guide to building and nurturing a learning network
Across BHP Foundation’s portfolio, we have funded and tested various forms of learning networks grounded in the belief that strategic learning is fundamental to achieving maximum impact. One example is a network called Ampliseed, designed with a community of BHP Foundation partner organizations to facilitate cross-learning pursuing landscape-scale conservation of globally significant environments.
Through workshops, cross-cultural exchanges, peer-led trainings, and co-created knowledge products, Ampliseed fostered a space where ideas, insights, and relationships could thrive.
After five years of this network, co-created with and facilitated by Pollination Foundation, we share the practices learnt through it and with its members. Our hope is to convey the value of peer learning networks like Ampliseed in pursuit of ambitious change.
Seeds to Systems: Building and Nurturing Networks for Lasting Impact
This report details the creation and evolution of a community-led learning network, sharing lessons through reflective storytelling and qualitative evidence.
It is organized into thematic sections covering:
- Ampliseed’s origin story, membership and theory of change,
- the systemic impacts of networked collaboration,
- an analysis of key activities and peer learning in action,
- challenges and how our adaptive learning design approached them; and
- strategic opportunities for scaling and sustainability.
It includes member voices, real examples, and practical recommendations throughout. Where relevant, it draw on learning theory (e.g. communities of practice, social learning theory, collective impact) to show how Ampliseed worked and what others can replicate.

This toolkit offers step-by-step guidance and insightful reflections for creating resilient, sustainable and impactful networks.
It offers:
- Practical instructions for network formation and management.
- Case studies and real-world examples from Ampliseed’s experience.

- Insights on advocacy, governance, and sustainability.
